Guido, Ben and Maggie like to hang out at the top of the slope in the backyard. But, this day, Guido was sure he heard a new sound coming from the other side of the fence.

Maggie thought her sense of smell was better than Guido's, so she stuck her nose right in there.

What if there were food on the other side of the fence? Ben rushed to make sure he wouldn't miss out.

Guido couldn't believe his eyes! There had been something on the other side of the fence!

But now, it was on Guido's side of the fence. And, it was a doggy nose!!

Book Review: Dog Park Diary. The Social Round of Goody Beagle. as "told to" Kim Pearson. Photographs by Anne Lindsay. Published by Primary Sources Books, imprint of Wyatt-MacKenzie, 2008. 60 page, soft-cover book.

Since this book was "told to" Kim Pearson by Goody Beagle, I've asked Maggie, the powder puff Chinese Crested, to "tell me" her review of the book. Maggie seemed like the perfect dog to review this book because there's a lot of peeing & butt-sniffing communication and photos in this book. Maggie is known as a mark-aholic and she is lovingly known around here as "Maggie Poo". Once you read Goody Beagle's Dog Park Diary, you'll understand why Maggie was asked to review this book. -- Sherrie

I took my job, as reviewer of "Dog Park Diary", very seriously. I consider myself to be an expert on dog park social life. I had no bones about being asked to do this project. Quickly, Goody Beagle's diary took me to a fun place that many dogs only dream about going to.

When I got to page 35, the page with the gorgeous Chihuahua photo, Ben starting looking over my shoulder. Ben claimed to be an expert on digital photography. Male dogs. Such attitudes. Goody Beagle's diary will tell you all about attitudes dogs have at dog parks.

As a mark-aholic, myself, I can certainly relate to all the diary comments about dog pee and butt-sniffing. Goody Beagle's diary seemed a bit obsessed with the topic, however. We dogs communicate in many ways and I think Goody Beagle's Diary could have expanded the communication topic and made the diary more humorous and sweeter.

The pooping dog photo was a bit too much. Even for my taste. (They don't call me "Maggie Poo" for nothing!)

I decided to ask a few of my close friends, who also go to dog parks, what they thought of the book.

Ben thought he looked like Goody Beagle. Once he was over admiring himself, Ben added that he liked the easy-reading style of the diary. The font was nice and simple, too. He wondered if elementary school aged kids would like the story best. Besides dogs, that is.

Guido was intrigued by "Sunday" in the diary. Like Goody Beagle, Guido loves to chase rabbits. He, too, dreams of killing a nice, juicy rabbit. But, that'll never happen. Guido would run and hide, if a rabbit ever really gave him any eye contact.

Suzie liked the book's soft cover. That's as far as she got. Good thing our human didn't ask Suzie to review the book.

As some of you dawgs know, Belle is our next door neighbor. She is a Brittany Spaniel. Goody Beagle's photographer lives with Alice B. Spaniel. So, I thought Belle would get a big kick out of reading Dog Park Diary.

As soon as I got to Belle's house, I started to show her Dog Park Diary. Wouldn't you know it? Canyon the Cat got in the way. Before I could show Belle the book, Canyon was pointing out the photo of Alice B. Spaniel. Took all the fun out of the moment. No wonder they don't have cat parks. Can you imagine a cat writing a diary?

"Dear Diary, Today, I visited my kitty litter box. Then, I took a nap. Never
made it to the cat park."

When I gave the book to Belle, first thing she did was sniff the book.

"Excuse me, Belle. This is NOT a scratch and sniff book. This is a diary!"

Belle posed like Alice B. Spaniel does in the dairy photograph. Don't tell my human this (because I want to be served dinner, tonight) but I think Alice B. Spaniel's photographer does a lot better job taking photos.

Since Belle is a hunting dog by nature, she kept trying to find one thing in the book review that I hadn't mentioned. Sure enough. She found it. Dog Park Diary was written by a woman, photographed by a woman and designed by a woman. Even Goody Beagle is a woman. Dog Park Diary is one more publication fully supported by women.

I'd recommend "Dog Park Diary. The Social Round of Goody Beagle". What's more, I'd recommend every dog get to romp around a dog park at least once in her lifetime. I hope every dawg has as nice of a dog park, as Goody Beagle has. Oh, and Goody Beagle, if you are reading this review.....stay away from my rabbit!! :) --Maggie

Ants don't just ruin picnics. They hang out at dog parks, too.

Ants are known to ruin picnics but they can ruin a lot of other fun activities, too. Last evening, I took Ben and Maggie to the dog park. Maggie and I were walking the 1/4 mile circumference of the dog park while Ben was socializing.

Ben became particularly chatty with two cute poodle. The three were really enjoying each other's company since most of the other dogs in the park were over-sized. Suddenly, Ben came running over to me on three legs. I thought maybe he'd stepped on a sticky weed. So, I picked Ben up to remove the sticker from his foot.

Ben's foot was very swollen and so was his leg. It had happened very quickly. Fortunately, the poodles' mom had seen it all and told me that Ben has stepped on an ant hill. Poor Ben. I couldn't even touch his foot w/o him howling.

Since I knew the ants had attacked Ben's paw, I knew what was causing the swelling. We needed Benadryl immediately. So, I called Jim and told him to get to the dog park with Benadryl ASAP. I had barely managed to get Ben and Maggie out of the dog park when I saw Jim driving his car down the bike path towards us!

Fortunately, Ben's face didn't swell and he didn't have breathing problems. Got him home and washed his foot and leg. Gave him some baby aspirin, too. Maggie and Jim sat with Ben all evening long. Guido paced around the house because he knew Ben was ailing. Suzie just growled. She was missing her evening nap with all the commotion.

Ben's doing fine this morning.

The fire ants ruined our fun. I'm sure someone at the human park across the street was having a picnic. Ants need to know that it is their job to ruin picnics. They shouldn't hang out at dog parks. And...you can quote me on that!

My newest bathroom decoration

My newest bathroom decoration is a toilet lid painted by Kate in Florida. Kate's painted lids before but never painted one to be hung on the wall. She removed the seat (so I wouldn't have to pay shipping for it) and just painted the lid. I didn't need the seat to be hung on the wall.

Once I received the lid, I drilled holes in the lid accessories and put a dowel through the holes. Hung it on cafe rod holders. I think I will paint the dowel white to match the toilet lid. What do you think? Cute, isn't it?

So, I was at Walgreen's the other day and bought this kid's gazebo. Told the clerk, "It's for my dogs". He laughed at me and said, "They'll have to be well-trained to get them to sit in there." It's so nice to have well-trained dogs!!!

By the way, Maggie's been in the gazebo, too but I've never had my camera with me when she's been enjoying the shade.

Here's a photo of the bucket that holds the dog toys. Yes, I realize my dogs are not lacking for stuffed toys. Here's the problem. Every time I pile the toys in the bucket, a certain someone thinks the toys need to be freed from bucket imprisonment. Time for me to face the facts. I cannot keep the toys contained. Stuffed toys will always be tripping my feet.

This morning, I went upstairs to get ready for my day and I left the dogs in the family room. Minutes later, I heard an awful lot of noise and commotion coming from that family room. I wondered what those dogs were up to! When I returned to the dogs, I found my work-in-progress (Spring Snow Shawl) had been abducted and left on the floor.

A trail of yarn seemed to lead to the main perpetrator of this particular crime.

But, the thief wasn't done yet. After he grabbed the yarn a second time, he tried to drag it outside.

Soon, help arrived!! Maggie and Guido pulled the yarn and shawl back into the house. Wasn't that nice?

Wait a minute. What happened to my help? Maggie was eating my yarn!

I wonder...do you think Guido was supposed to be "the look-out"? He wasn't much of an accomplice, was he?

Xolos are a breed of dog that can provide the same warmth as a heating pad for relief of chronic pain. Due to their hairlessness, the dogs' heat is easily felt. Dogs weighing more than 12 lbs also provide traction that can contribute to pain relief.

1. Those interested in obtaining a "hot dog" have a possibility of receiving a grant for a dog. Please visit http://www.pawsforcomfort.com/ for grant criteria, pictures, and the application forms.

2. Currently two dogs are available: one male and one female miniature-size Xolos, born Oct. 15, 2007.

3. The dogs are currently undergoing obedience and service dog preparation training. The grant does include service dog training costs and other fees.

A Big Surprise Arrived!

This morning, I went out the front door of the house to pick up the morning newspapers from the driveway. By the front door was a nice big box from My Pet Gifts. I thought to myself, "Now what ad did I click on and what did I buy?"

When I opened the box, I found a cute note from my friend, Kathy North. Something about her being on my tail to keep up with my web site chores. And, hoping the dogs would wag their tails at this gift. Let me tell you. The dogs DID wag their tails at this gift.

And, he got it!

But, what happened to the fluffy, blue lamb??

Now, we know why everyone else wanted the rope toy and not the lamb toy! No one would dare grab a toy from Suzie's possession.

This is Benz. He is a hairless Chinese Crested, who is about 4 yrs old. Benz is quite a bit larger than our other three Chinese Cresteds.

Fostering Benz is something that Jim wanted to do. He met Benz a couple weeks ago and they bonded. I did not meet Benz until tonight. I can't say "no" to much of anything, so Benz came home with us.

I'll keep you updated on the fostering! I hadn't seen Jim this happy, though, in over a month.

Monday, Dec. 17th, we had to say "good-bye" to our 9-1/2 yr old shih-poo, Muffie. On December 6, Muffie suffered congestive heart failure. Despite being on medication, Muffie experienced two more episodes of heart failure in a week's time. Muffie refused to eat and I was forced to feed her using a syringe.

Muffie died peacefully in my arms. We hated to lose Muffie but we were happy that she felt secure, loved and cared for even up to the end.

Some of my friends have felt badly for me that Muffie died a week before Christmas. But, I disagree. Muffie was the most loving, giving, caring and joyful dog I've ever known. Her life was what Christmas is all about.

Muffie opened her heart and home to three Chinese cresteds who had never known love and security in their lives. Muffie never growled or showed any jealousy towards them. Everything that was Muffie's became the cresteds, too. Muffie's compassion reached out to every person and every being.

It is always difficult to lose a loved one but I can't think of a better time of the year to lose our dear Muffie than Christmas. Each Christmas, we will be reminded of Muffie and the Christmas spirit that she exhibited year round.

Welcome to the family, Rocky!

Rocky is a silky terrier. He was born in the midde of August, 2007. Isn't he adorable? Rocky is now living with Duncan. Duncan and Rocky are both owned by my sister's family.

Rocky has quite a lot of energy and personality. Good thing Heather has two girls to help keep up with this little guy. Duncan just turned 2 yrs old, so there's a lot of puppy left in him, too.

Duncan is a bichon/shih tzu mix.

October 31, 2007 will be our 2 year anniversary of adopting Suzie. This past year, I found out that Suzie had been born May 11, 1996. So, she is older than we thought. But, Suzie is a young 11 yr old. She's full of energy and trouble! But, Suzie is my very loyal companion.

5 week old Silky puppies

Not much is cuter than a 5 week old puppy. Today, I was able to spend time with 4 adorable, 5 week old Silky Terrier pups. The breeder is a friend of Heather & Kayla's. So, the pups were spending a few hours at Heather's house.

Duncan, Heather's dog, wasn't too sure about the puppies being in his area. But, he was very good about it and not territorial at all.

This is adorable Max. He's a Lhasa Apso, who was adopted from a shelter several years ago. Shelly and Randy are my neighbors, who adopted Max. (Shelly is also my hairstylist, btw.) Max has a great temperment and is loved by his owners.

Photos from Saturday's Wag 'n' Trails

Last Saturday, Maggie, Suzie, Jim and I met Kathleen and Maxwell at the Denver Dumb Friends League Buddy Center Wag 'n' Trails fundraiser. The trail is 1.6 miles long and most of it is uphill through rugged terrain.

This first photo doesn't show rugged terrain, does it? I took this photo, as we were hiking uphill. Stopping to take pictures was my excuse for stopping to catch my breath!

Maxwell's favorite stop on the trail was Cold Stone Creamery's booth. They provided free ice cream to dogs and their owners. Kathleen and I enjoyed watching Maxwell gobble up the ice cream. He looked up at Kathleen for "more, please" but she limited his intake. After all, a cute little chihuahua shouldn't eat too much doggy ice cream when there's a big trail ahead of him.

Along the way, the Buddy Center had photographers, who were taking photos of the charitable participants. Here's the photo that a professional photographer took of us. Nice to have a photo that includes Jim, don't you think? Usually, it is just a photo of me with the dogs.

Here's a photo of me, Suzie, Maggie, Kathleen and Maggie. We had just completed the exhausting hike.

Don't you love the expression on Maxwell's face? This was at the end of our hike.

Lastly, here's a photo of Suzie. I think she was smiling because she had successfully completed her 3rd Denver Dumb Friends League walk fundraiser. This was her second year of participating in the 1.6 mile, grueling hike. She was mighty proud of herself.

This is the new logo of Rocky Mountain Chinese Crested Rescue. DD drew the Chinese crested and the line drawing of the mountain range. Then, I used Paint Shop Pro to make the drawings into a logo. We needed something simple for hard copy printing.

In my Google Reader, I received an ESPN article that caught my eye. After I read it, I had to laugh. Reading some comments made by pro athletes, it is hard to tell whether they are more arrogant or more ignorant. Here's the headline that came through my Google Reader:

"Artest happy with Vick apology, wants to reach out"

I laughed my head off and rolled my eyes when I read this headline. (Not a pretty site, btw!) If ESPN put this headline in my Google Reader to get me to read the article and comments, it worked! Now you've got to read the article and then read the comments made by other readers of the article.

This is the only laughable thing about the Michael Vick and Ron Artest dog stories.

It was a busy Monday for DD, the groomer. But, it was also a happy grooming day because she was surrounded with Chinese Cresteds! All but one of the Chinese Cresteds had been rescued & re-homed by DD's Rocky Mountain Chinese Crested Rescue.

Time to update you on who has been adopted from the summer 6-pack of Chinese Cresteds.

Katrina was adopted by Connie, who also adopted Cheng Li and Bambi. Connie is a great supporter of the Rocky Mountain Chinese Crested Rescue.

Wolfie was just adopted!

Adam was adopted and he hopes to be involved in agility! Wouldn't that be perfect for Adam?

MacKenzie was adopted by Chelsey, who is also a great supporter of Rocky Mountain Chinese Crested Rescue. Chelsey is always ready to help out when needed.

Princess was adopted by someone who adores Chinese Cresteds.

Looks like Leonora is the only one left to be adopted.

On February 18, 2007, Atlanta Falcons' Jonathan Babineaux beat to death his live-in girlfriend's dog, Kilo, a one-year-old pit bull mix. The motive was apparent retaliation against his girlfriend, Blair Anderson, for an argument she and Babineaux had earlier that same night. After the argument, Anderson left the house, leaving her two dogs, Kilo and Ace, with the Falcons' defensive lineman. Not long after, Babineaux phoned Anderson to inform her that something was wrong with Kilo. He advised that she should come home and check on him. Anderson returned home to find Kilo in extreme physical distress. Anderson rushed Kilo to the vet but he was dead on arrival. Autopsy results showed Kilo died from blunt force trauma to the head, leading Gwinnett County police to arrest and charge Babineaux with felony cruelty to animals. The second dog, Ace, was later removed from the Babineaux household and placed in the care of Animal Control.

In spite of the felony charge, Babineaux remains free on $2,300 bond and is still actively playing for the Falcons. To date, Babineaux has received no punishment or suspension from either the Falcons or the NFL.

Blogger William K. Wolfrum aptly sums up the glaring hypocrisy which now enshrouds the Atlanta Falcons:

Babineaux is currently in the Falcons pre-season camp, obviously keeping a low profile.

Simply put, however, as long as Babineaux is allowed to play with the Falcons while Vick is forced to sit out, the NFL's and the Falcons' treatment of Vick can only be seen as a PR ploy. It has nothing to do with ethics, or a standard of character they want from their players.

As long as Babineaux remains active, the NFL and the Falcons are little more than hypocrites whose hands were forced in the Vick case.

About 63 percent of households in the United States own a pet — that's about 71.1 million homes, according to a survey from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association Inc.

As many as 25 percent of families with a pet have provided for their animals through wills or trusts, said Sara Amundson, executive director with the Humane Society Legislative Fund. "People really consider pets as members of their family," she said.

Each year two million to four million pets are euthanized, some because they lost their home when their guardian died. Pet owners have a responsibility to make sure that their furry friends don't end up in a shelter and become "a burden on the municipality," Amundson said.

Trusts are a 'babysitter's note'

Pet trusts began to gain steam in the early 1990s, and now 39 states and the District of Columbia have come to recognize them, according to Amundson. There is also proposed legislation in the House of Representatives to amend the Internal Revenue Code to treat charitable remainder pet trusts like similar trusts for people.

Rachel Hirschfeld, an attorney specializing in pet trusts and practicing in New York state, said she gets 10 calls about pet trusts for each one that she received five years ago. In the past few years, she's worked on dozens of pet trusts.

It's important to plan ahead for the health of your pet, Hirschfeld said, and suggested providing for conditions at least six months in the future. "This is like a babysitter's note, you plot every detail in it and you leave instructions as to how you want things done," she said.

Pet trusts enable owners to leave money earmarked for the care of their animals, and specify how they want pets to be treated. In comparison, wills are used for disbursing assets, but instructions about treatment are not enforceable.

If a trust is written to provide for any animal alive at the time of the death of the original pet owner, then there is no need to change the trust to add pets that may have been acquired or subtract those who have died.

Thistle Makes Newspaper Front Page

Congratulations, Thistle, for making the front page photo of local newspaper Highlands Ranch Herald. What a great surprise we all had when we opened our local newspaper Thursday evening and saw a huge photo with sweet Thistle.

Thistle was walking in the 2006 "Dogs of the British Isles" parade at the Highlands Games Scottish Festival in Highlands Ranch, CO. Thistle was proudly wearing a kilt made by my good friend (and his "mom") Karen. He was being walked by his "dad" Jerry, who is the Colorado Regent for the Clan MacLachlan Society Western Branch. Walking with Thistle was Connor, the grandson of Clan MacLachlan Society's Western Branch President.

I look forward to seeing Thistle and his Westie "siblings", Courtney and Archie, wearing their fashionable Scottish kilts, as they walk in the 2007 "Dogs of the British Isles" parade next Saturday.

Americans now spend $41 billion a year on their pets — more than the gross domestic product of all but 64 countries in the world. That's double the amount shelled out on pets a decade ago, with annual spending expected to hit $52 billion in the next two years, according to Packaged Facts, a consumer research company based in Rockville, Md. That puts the yearly cost of buying, feeding, and caring for pets in excess of what Americans spend on the movies ($10.8 billion), playing video games ($11.6 billion), and listening to recorded music ($10.6 billion) combined. "People are no longer satisfied to reward their pet in pet terms," argues Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Products Manufacturers Assn. (APPMA). "They want to reward their pet in human terms." That means hotels instead of kennels, braces to fix crooked teeth, and frilly canine ball gowns. Pet owners are becoming increasingly demanding consumers who won't put up with substandard products, unstimulating environments, or shoddy service for their animals. But the escalating volume and cost of services, especially in the realm of animal medicine, raises ethical issues about how far all this loving should go.
